Measure humidity before buying
A cheap hygrometer can tell you whether the basement has a moisture problem. If relative humidity stays high, a dehumidifier is the relevant appliance for moisture removal.
An air purifier can reduce airborne particles and some odor when equipped with carbon, but it does not remove meaningful water from the air.
Size the purifier for occupied air volume
Finished basements with open recreation areas often need substantial CADR. Divide very large or partitioned basements into zones rather than assuming one machine will circulate through closed doors.
Use ceiling height in the calculation because basement ceilings can differ materially from standard assumptions.
Treat sources first
Fix leaks, drainage defects and persistent condensation before relying on appliances. If visible mold is extensive or returns after cleaning, the building issue deserves direct attention.
For musty odor after moisture is controlled, a purifier with meaningful carbon can supplement cleaning and ventilation.
Use the same sizing basis across brands. Room-size claims can use different air-change assumptions. When possible, compare published CADR and calculate the airflow your room actually needs.
