- Sizing only by floor area

Moisture load is more important than square footage alone
Two identical 1,000 ft² basements can need very different dehumidifiers if one has seepage, open sump pits or frequent wet laundry. Treat square footage as a starting point.
If humidity remains high despite continuous operation, the unit may be undersized or the building may have an uncontrolled moisture source.
Plan drainage before purchase
Gravity drainage is simple when a suitable floor drain is lower than the dehumidifier. If the drain route must go uphill, choose a model with a pump or use an external condensate pump rated for the application.
A large bucket does not solve the inconvenience of daily emptying in a persistently damp basement.
Cold basements need defrost capability
Dehumidifier performance changes with temperature. In cooler basements, look for operating-temperature specifications and automatic defrost behavior.
Keep the air intake and outlet clear and follow the manufacturer’s clearance requirements.
Use the same sizing basis across brands. Room-size claims can use different air-change assumptions. When possible, compare published CADR and calculate the airflow your room actually needs.
