Use smoke CADR when it is published
CADR is pollutant-specific. When a manufacturer or AHAM listing provides smoke CADR, it is more informative for wildfire use than a generic room-size claim.
A higher CADR can also create headroom to run below maximum fan speed while maintaining useful filtration.
Particles and odors are different jobs
HEPA-class or comparable high-efficiency particle filters target smoke particles. Activated carbon targets some odors and gases, but performance depends heavily on the amount and type of sorbent media.
If odor control is important, compare actual carbon construction rather than simply checking whether “carbon” appears in the feature list.
Room sealing and filter loading matter
During a smoke event, reduce outdoor-air leakage where practical and avoid activities that add indoor particles. Heavy smoke can load filters faster than normal use, so inspect them rather than relying only on a calendar schedule.
For large or divided spaces, two appropriately sized purifiers can sometimes distribute clean air better than one unit placed far from the occupied area.
Use the same sizing basis across brands. Room-size claims can use different air-change assumptions. When possible, compare published CADR and calculate the airflow your room actually needs.
