Start with moisture severity
A basement that occasionally reaches high humidity after storms is different from one with visible condensation or chronic seepage. More severe moisture loads justify more removal capacity and better drainage.
Record humidity over several days if possible before choosing the appliance.
Think in operating hours, not just label capacity
A unit that is technically large enough but runs continuously at its limit can be noisy and slow to recover after moisture spikes. Some headroom improves control.
At the other extreme, extreme oversizing can reduce comfort and increase cost without solving source problems.
Drainage turns a good unit into a practical one
For sustained basement use, continuous drain capability is usually more important than bucket size. Verify where the water will go before purchase.
If gravity drainage is impossible, a built-in pump can simplify installation.
Use the same sizing basis across brands. Room-size claims can use different air-change assumptions. When possible, compare published CADR and calculate the airflow your room actually needs.
